Canada’s Marriage Fraud Crackdown

Men have been getting screwed by mail order brides and unscrupulous foreign women seeking to escape “the old country” for quite some time now. Just when I was convinced Canada didn’t give a toss about the plight of men, the pendulum appears to be swinging back.

Of course women’s special interest groups are in a huff about the idea. We’ll get back to that later.

Here’s the proposed law.

If a foreign spouse ends the marriage before two years, he or she could be deported from Canada, according to a new proposed federal rule.

Conservatives believe that a two-year probationary period for foreign spouses will prevent immigration marriage fraud: getting hitched solely for the purpose of side-stepping the Canadian immigration process.

The mail-order bride industry is in favor of it.

Russian bride scam stories have made it tough for services like Volga Girl. They may be able to regain men’s trust if the law is passed.

Volga Girl, which promotes web-based international marriages, hopes the new rules will “legitimize” the industry.

“Let the visa go ahead to come to Canada and then, yeah, a two-year probationary period is fine,” said Mark Scrivener, whose company describes itself as the “most reliable and effective way to find your Russian wife.”

The feminists are pissed.

The best argument the opposition has against passing this new law is that it “could put women in danger, especially if their Canadian husbands abuse them.”

“There is a power imbalance inherent in this policy in regards to women, and if women are in abusive relationships we know that abuse is already silenced within our society,” said Stephanie Lomatski, executive director of the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women.

Lomatski said she believes women could become trapped in abusive marriages because they would fear deportation.

Funny that the first thing she mentions is power. That’s what this is about more so than the irrelevant, unproven argument that the new law may increase the occurrence of domestic abuse.

The Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women is a thinly veiled feminist group that is convinced “male privilege” is real and must be eradicated.

Immigration marriage fraud has mainly been perpetrated against men. That goes against feminist ideologies that men must be the perpetrator and women must be the victim. I’m guessing that this role reversal doesn’t fit with Lomatski’s world view. In order to swing women back into the role of victims she brings up cases of abuse.

Here’s my view.

In the rare case that a Canadian man is proven to physically abuse his foreign wife, exceptions can be made to the two year rule. This does not mean however, that the entire law should be tossed aside because of a special interest group.

Generally a probationary period for foreigners will do much more good than bad. The law will save desperate men and women from the emotional distress of being used by cold-hearted opportunists. These users are not the type of people I want to see in Canada.
